AXEL IS A STRONG ADVOCATE FOR THE STUDENTS AND THE COMMUNITY.

Michael Axel Brown is a proud veteran and loving father who is passionate about his community and the students he represents. Axel is a strong advocate for the students of UCCS and the community, currently serving as the first two-time Student Body President and the only graduate student to hold the role. Previously, Axel served as the chair of the Inter-Campus Student Forum (ICSF), representing the needs of all four CU campuses at every CU Regents meeting. This experience makes Axel uniquely suited to be a Regent because he understands how to advocate for the needs of students at every level.

issues and priorities

I, like many UCCS students, have often felt underrepresented by the CU Board of Regents. They frequently celebrate CU Boulder and its sports teams or students, but when it comes to UCCS, it always appears as though our students and accomplishments are simply an afterthought. I’m running for regent to change that narrative and bring our students, teams, and our amazing mascot, Clyde, into the mainstream.

As a regent, I am dedicated to fighting for a more affordable college education for every student in Colorado, regardless of background. I will work closely with legislators, faculty, staff, and students to understand their educational and financial needs and will find a way to accomplish these needs in a manner that is financially sustainable and affordable for our biggest constituency, the CU student population.”

Vision

As a regent, I will strive to further strengthen the Board of Regents’ dedication to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Based on my personal experience as a student of color, I will fight to ensure that every voice is heard, supported, and properly represented on the UCCS campus and beyond.

Our Main Attention

To amplify both the student voice and the community’s influence within the CU system.

A Candidate From You is a Regent For You

Increase Accessibility to Higher Education for Everyone

As a candidate for CU Regent, my unwavering dedication lies in ensuring the accessibility of higher education to all individuals, irrespective of their background or circumstances. Drawing from my own transformative journey, where I enlisted in the military to secure a path towards affording higher education, I deeply comprehend the urgency of dismantling systemic barriers and preventing anyone from slipping through the cracks. Through collaborative endeavors and pioneering strategies, including the expansion of scholarship opportunities, establishment of mentorship programs, and introduction of flexible learning options such as remote education, alongside ensuring the recognition of prior learning and employment credits, my objective is to forge inclusive, equitable, and accessible pathways to higher education for every member of our community.

Public Safety on CU Campuses for All

Ensuring public safety remains a paramount concern across all CU campuses. As a candidate for CU Regent, my unwavering commitment lies in guaranteeing a sense of safety and security for every student, faculty member, and visitor within our university environment. Drawing from my personal encounters with loss, both on my own campus and those of my family members, I am determined to advocate for comprehensive safety measures, proactive community engagement, and efficient crisis response protocols that address the daily challenges faced by our CU campuses. Together, let us foster campuses that not only facilitate learning and growth but also instill a profound sense of security.

Maximum Community Impact

As a candidate for CU Regent, I deeply acknowledge the profound influence our university can wield on the surrounding community. Drawing from my extensive experience in Student Government, where I served from the position of Senator of Military Affairs to the role of Student Body President, I am wholeheartedly committed to optimizing the positive impact of CU on our community. By forging strategic partnerships, spearheading community outreach initiatives, and championing collaborative projects like Friendsgiving and various other CU-led initiatives, my goal is to leverage the university’s resources and expertise to address pressing issues, stimulate economic growth, and elevate the overall quality of life for all members of UCCS and our community.

Father

Axel is a devoted father of two, Matthew Arian and Leia Ava. His primary motivation for pursuing higher education is to exemplify to them the variety of possibilities available in life.

Veteran

Axel, an Honorably Discharged Veteran, dedicated six years of service to the military from 2013 to 2019. Following the completion of his duty, he took the initiative to further his education, enrolling at Pikes Peak Community College (PPCC) with the ultimate goal of transferring to UCCS.

Social Worker

Axel understands the complexities of being a non-traditional student, among other things. That’s why he believes that with his background in social work, he is the perfect advocate for the students and the community of UCCS and CD5. Axel is currently pursuing a degree in Social Work at UCCS. He completed his Bachelor of Social Work in May 2023 from the College of Public Service and aims to graduate in May 2024 with his Master of Social Work, aspiring to become involved in policy revision and oversight.

As a Veteran, my biggest priority as Regent would be strengthening the support for both active duty and veteran students. We need to close the gap between what the GI Bill funds and what our soldiers have to pay out of pocket. I will start work to close this gap on my first day in office. We also need to create more open spaces on campus for members of this community. UCCS has an excellent Veterans and Military affairs center but it’s hidden from many students and I want to change that.
